Positive reinforcement–based training is one of the most effective and dog-friendly ways to teach new skills and strengthen behavior. One of the most common tools we use in this training is food reinforcement—aka treats!
If you're short on time or need something designed specifically for training, pet store treats can be a great option. However, they aren’t your only choice. Treats can add up quickly, and not every dog does best with store-bought options. The good news? You have lots of alternatives that are affordable, convenient, and just as motivating for your dog.
Whether you’re trying to save money, cut down on shopping trips, or work around food sensitivities, below are some ideas to help you find what works best for your dog.
Always introduce new foods slowly and keep an eye on how your dog responds.
The most important thing to remember is that every dog is different. What one dog finds irresistible, another might ignore completely. Experiment with a few options and notice what is a low, medium and high value treat for them. This can be useful information when training with different levels of distractions.
Tip: If your pup doesn’t like certain treats or needs enticement use a snack container / pouch and mix multiple treats together then store for at least 12+ hrs to allow them to marinate!
